The inspiration for Ahimsa Yoga Studio began in 2009 as Oak Parker Kelly Merydith was inspired by popular Back Bay Yoga Studio while earning her business degree at Northeastern University in Boston. And in the midst of a six-month internship at a financial trading company in Chicago, she was moved by the power of yoga to relieve stress, create strength and self-realization as she took daily lunchtime classes at Akal Yoga in the Loop.
Kelly then completed her teacher training at the renowned YogaWorks in Santa Monica, California the summer after graduating from college in 2010. She spent the next year working odd jobs, saving money to pursue her dream of opening a yoga studio. The studio opened May 2011. Kelly's dad Chuck, who had recently survived bladder cancer, with the experience changing his life perspective, was similarly inspired by yoga and completed his teacher training at YogaWorks in California. Both Kelly and Chuck have recently completed their 500-hour teacher training at Chicago's premier training studio, Moksha Yoga. Ahimsa's instructors are RYT certified and provide a range of teaching, all with different styles.
Through its classical yoga teachings, the studio is committed improving the physical, mental, and spiritual sides of all practitioners. The studio is dedicated to providing a safe, non-competitive, community atmosphere. There are classes for all ages and levels including Beginners, Vinyasa Flow, Hatha, Gentle/Restorative, Yin and YogaKids/Teens, and a range of specialized workshops.
Ahimsa is a sanskrit word that means non-harming is the inspiration for providing a safe, nurturing, non-competitive community atmosphere.
